Histopathological Study on Congestive splenomegaly

Abstract
With 14 cases of congestive splenomegaly where splenectomy was performed the author made a comparative study on splenic histopathology and its associated hematologic picture, and the results were obtained as following:
1) In 14 cases as a whole which break down to 11 cases of cirrhosis and 3 cases of Banti¢¥s syndrome, spleen weighed from 510 to 1,650 gm. Hematologically, anemia was a manifest finding in all cases, leukopenia in 12 cases, and thrombocytopenia in 13 cases.
2) Histopathological findings of spleen showed evidencen of congestion, Fibrosis, and periarterial hemorrhahages in almost all cases, with demonstration of siderofibrotic nodules only in 5 cases. On the other hand, lymph follicles had an over all picture of atrophy where as 2 cases had a trace of germinal center with the remaining cases haveing none at all. Inside-out follicles appeared in all cases, but no evidence of myelopoiesis could be found.
3) Emergence of mamy inside-out follicles does not seem to account for the size of congestive splenomegaly or severity of hypersplenism.
